We farm five distinct pieces of ground, from one of the oldest continuously farmed sites in the Eola-Amity Hills to a family plot in the shadow of Yosemite. Each one is different. Each one asks something different of us. That's the point.
Van Duzer Corridor AVA
A multi-generation working farm in the Willamette Valley, we called it The Farmstead because that's what it is. In the spring of 2021, Union Wine Company purchased this property located just outside of Sheridan, Oregon in the Van Duzer Corridor AVA. At 157 planted acres across a 210-acre property, The Farmstead is our largest vineyard holding.

The vineyard sits at 390 to 440 feet in elevation, where silty clay loam soils and proximity to the Van Duzer Corridor create a distinctive growing environment. Even while other parts of the Willamette Valley experience heat, The Farmstead can be quite windy and cool, shaped by the marine air that funnels through the corridor. This unique climate produces Pinot Noir with structured, leathery tannins and very Pacific Northwest fruit: brambly characteristics that set these wines apart. The property offers a three-mountain view from its high point that reminds you this seemingly flat terrain is anything but.

Union Wine Company is actively shaping The Farmstead's future through progressive viticulture. Single high wire trellising is coming into production over the next several years, and we're planting non-traditional varieties including hybrid trial blocks, an exciting exploration of what this site can produce as climate and consumer preferences evolve. The vineyard features a diverse array of Pinot Noir clones including Dijon, Champagne, and Swiss selections, along with selections like Pommard and AS1 that add complexity and heritage to our vineyard palette.

Eola-Amity Hills AVA
With over 50 years of winemaking history, Amity Vineyard is the oldest continuously farmed site in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. The vineyard has been home to significant firsts in Oregon wine, from sulfite-free winemaking to early advocacy for Riesling as a serious Willamette Valley variety. The vineyard's sedimentary soils vary in depth and composition across the property, creating diverse expressions of place that have been refined over five decades of careful stewardship.

The dramatic diurnal shift during the growing season creates wines of remarkable elegance and tension. Spend a hot summer day on this site and you'll understand immediately: as the sun sets, the temperature drops so rapidly you'll reach for a heavy layer.

When fog rolls through the property, it transforms the landscape into something almost spiritual, wrapping the ancient vines in quiet mystery. The small block of Riesling that remains is a living connection to the vineyard's groundbreaking past, while ongoing redevelopment of phylloxera-affected areas and the introduction of sheep grazing point toward its future.

At the highest elevation of Amity Vineyard, Boulder Block stands as a testament to friendship forged against wind and stone. This extraordinary site presents a compelling paradox: consistent in its challenging beauty, yet unpredictable in what it demands. The interplay of fierce winds, ancient volcanic soils, and dramatic elevation creates an environment that requires both spontaneity and skill from our vineyard team. Here, where the elements are most intense, the vines dig deep into rocky soils. Still young, still finding their footing, they are already shaped by one of Oregon's most demanding landscapes.

The mountain of rocks that forms the foundation of this hilltop block tells its own story: vines that must work harder, reach deeper. What excites us most is where these vines are planted, right along the crest, meaning the fruit will ultimately capture every exposure the peak has to offer. When Boulder Block does produce its first vintage, likely 2027 or 2028, we expect it to reflect that rare wholeness, the raw beauty and power of a site seen from all sides.

Eola-Amity Hills AVA
A sheltered vineyard tucked into the wooded hillside south of Amity, we called it The Hollow because that's where the land settles and the wind stops. This calm, protected lower slope rises from the valley floor across 31 acres, extending from 240 to 400 feet in elevation on a westward-facing slope. An oak grove in the middle of the vineyard creates a striking focal point, providing sanctuary for native Willamette Valley flora and fauna while adding to the site's distinctive character.

The vineyard's various aspects and row orientations create interesting fruit diversity across the property. Proximity to the Van Duzer Corridor brings cooling influence and diurnal temperature shift, while the lower elevation and protective topography create a gentler growing environment than the exposed summit sites above. Union Wine Company recently took over farming operations at The Hollow, bringing changes to cover crop management and canopy practices while maintaining the vineyard's more intimate spacing: machine-picked but farmed with the attention typically reserved for small vineyards.

Sierra Foothills
Planted in 2007 on a rocky, south-facing slope in the Sierra Foothills, Yosemite Vineyard sits at 3,000 feet elevation, where abundant sunshine meets the cool nights that define this growing environment. The vineyard is planted with varied clones of Syrah, Grenache, Tannat, and Cabernet Franc, each variety carefully selected for this specific site: plants that bud later in the season to avoid late frost and ripen early enough to make the most of the altitude.

Our approach to farming here is guided by a simple principle: less is more. We recognize an obligation to be good stewards of this land, and that commitment has shaped every decision we make in the vineyard. Organic fertilizers, fungicides, and pesticides keep our footprint light. Water use is deliberate and conservative. Pruning and canopy management are done entirely by hand, because we believe that kind of attention is what the vines need and what this place deserves.
